A dream come true for its designers, the UK based yacht design company Yacht Island Designs was this fascinating tropical island yacht project. Steel made the floating tropical island. Building a luscious and luxurious environment that would sail away in the sunset, it would measure 90 meters in length, plenty of room. With a volcano built on the yacht, water was guided to flow down to the pool, where huts and luscious greenery surrounded it. The concept yacht was named the Tropical Island Paradise. With a retractable beach deck in the back of the yacht, an additional comfortable relaxation zone was presented. The yacht was equipped with high-end features like a cinema, library, games room, gym and sauna, with four VIP guest suites and a fascinating owner’s suite built into the volcano. The unique design was an introduction to luxury yachting. The idea became an exciting new venture in the world of custom, luxurious yacht design.

Redeveloping an existing bullring in the city of Barcelona into a major new mixed-use leisure and entertainment complex, Barcelona-based developer Sacresa appointed Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The scheme was formally opened to the public in March 2011. As a major landmark for the Plaça d’Espanya transport interchange, Las Arenas was strategically situated at the foothill of Montjuic at the intersection of Gran Via and Avenue Paral∙lel, two major city highways.

Due to the strong civic and cultural role which the building played in the life of Barcelona over nearly a century the redevelopment had retained and refurbished the striking neo-mudéjar façade, while creating an open and accessible entrance to the new building at street level. Approximately 47,000 m² of mixed activities has been created plus a 1,250-space car park in the basement, within the façade of the former bullring. The main activities were offered such as commercial, entertainment, health and leisure spaces focused around a central event space, including multiplex cinemas on the third floor and a gym and the ‘Museum of Rock’ on the fourth floor. In addition, a separate building – the ‘Eforum’ – in Carrer de Llançà, adjacent to the bullring, there were retail and restaurants at ground and first-floor levels, with four levels of offices above.

With ramps and stairs within the surrounding plinth providing access, the original 19th century bullring was raised above the levels of the surrounding streets. However, supporting the existing wall and creating new spaces for shops and restaurants, the redevelopment involved the excavation of the base of the façade and the insertion of composite arches. Providing level access to a wide range of retail facilities, a new, open public realm was established around the building. In contrast, the typical, historic street alignment of the Pla Cerda grid pattern of streets which were typical of the 19th century Barcelona streetscape was followed by the Eforum building. The most advanced architectural and engineering technologies were used for the approach of the bullring, while respecting and celebrating the fabric of the historical bullring to re-establish the building as a visually striking landmark for the city.

The inclusion of a 100-metrediameter habitable ‘dish’ with a 76-metrediameter domed roof, floating over the façade was the most spectacular aspect of the intervention.
Providing stunning views across the city, large terraces and space for cafés and restaurants were incorporated in this ‘plaza in the sky’. Providing access from Gran Via and Parc Joan Miró as well as Carrer Tarragona and Carrer de Llançà and forming a cruciform system leading into the central atrium space, two main access routes cut through the building at 180-degrees to each other. Providing access to all levels including the rooftop plaza, escalators were within these zones. Serving the parking and retail (-1) levels, partially-glazed passenger lifts were on one side of the circular atrium; on the other side of the atrium, two fully-glazed, panoramic passenger lifts were on the upper floors. In addition, it had two fully-glazed external lifts on Carrer de Llançà at the entrance to the Eforum office building and two panoramic passenger lifts (partially glazed) on the outside of the telecommunications tower facing Plaça d’Espanya.

The presence of the bullring was reinforced with this tower reinforces. Direct access was provided from the metro station Espanya to the building. From this elevated public space could access the multifunctional area within the dome and the restaurants around its perimeter. The resolution of the ground plane surrounding the bullring, where new plazas were created to provide connections with the existing metro station and neighbouring Parc Joan Miró, was equally important.

With services and circulation, such as escalators and stairways, accommodated in the cruciform-shaped zone, defined by the four raked pylon structures, huge pylons supported the roof and the giant dish. Based on a series of separate and complementary structural systems which allowed a variety of activities and user requirements to take place on different levels inside the building was the design. Creating an open and flexible space, the cupola/dome was supported by the dish. Due to the travelling of its columns to ground level within the four atria, an open, column free space at level 4 was allowed and the need for any structural members was removed to pass through the cinema spaces below at levels 2 and 3.

Large steel cantilevered boxes that effectively constituted a separate, self-contained structural system within the building and rest on a concrete base at level 2 formed these cinema spaces. From level 2 downwards, a more conventional concrete column and floor slab construction was applied for the retail areas. The spaces required by the client for different retail zones were provided with the design of the column layout. Additional, the existing façade of the historic bullring and the adjacent Eforum, which connected with the retail at ground level and also with the car park and basement ramps were supported by separate structural systems. A services spine and large goods lifts, with other services for the bullring complex placed on the roof of the Eforum was between the bullring façade and the Eforum.
A plastic coating which helped to reduce glare from reflected sunlight finished the roof dome. From its perimeter to the centre, the relatively shallow dome rose only ten metres. Having to keep within an envelope agreed during the initial planning consent, with its susceptibility to buckling and large deflections, the dimensions were nonnegotiable. Reducing the visual impact of the roof from a nearby historic fountain, the maximum crown height was fixed.

For the roof with the preferred solution, several structural options became a lamella structure in which the timber members formed a pattern of lozenges creating a grid-shell of timber. Defining a 30 metre-diameter oculus constructed from a simplified pattern of glu-lam members, the pattern changed at the crown where the structure terminated in a circular ring beam. The primary members of the dome were connected invisibly. As a result, perceiving only a continuous timber structure beneath the dome, all of the metal was concealed within the wood. Two layers of plywood topped the laminated beams and a layer of insulation, topped with a seamless liquid application roofing system for a weather-proof finish.

Overcoming the possibility of unusable low space at the perimeter of the dome, the entire roof was situated on a three-metre-high ‘skirt’. The skirt was consisted of 20 boomerang-shaped columns supporting the dome’s perimeter beam. Besides providing a visual contrast with the steel used to construct the dish, the approach of inclined struts had the environmental advantage of being a sustainable and renewable natural resource. The choice of timber also meant that the structure could be exposed to dramatic visual effect. Allowing for future flexibility and change to encourage a wide variety and rotation of activities, including sports events, fashion shows and exhibitions, all the constituent parts were structurally independent.

This former bullring in Barcelona was transformed into a leisure complex of the office design by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners , retaining the original facade. Named Las Arenas, providing roof terraces overlooking the city, the reopened building was given a 76m wide domed roof. Creating new entrances directly from the street rather than via ramps and staircases, the plinth was demolished. Improving connectivity with the nearby park and metro station, two new access routes were enabled to be created through the office building, as well as plazas around the perimeter. Removal of the plinth was put under new supporting columns. A central event space, a cinema, a gym and offices, were provided.
