The Menzies Research Building Design in Melbourne

This medical school for the University of Tasmania has designed by Melbourne architects Lyon. The building boasts a concrete façade punctuated by flowing arches and slanted windows. There are some facilities that housed by the Menzies Institute like a range of laboratories, accommodation and medical facilities. The building can be accessed through a formal archway on the street corner leads into a glazed atrium. A steel stairwell at the heart of the building connects all the main spaces and acts as communal meeting area for staff and students.

The project has conceptual basis that was to create a synergistic environment for these once separated facets of the University. And there is a core concept that is the creation of a ‘new culture’, reinforced in the building’s image and its social and functional planning. The public participation of the street has invited through its corner entry; large transparent steel windows and glazed atrium space. The space is created by an organic steel formed structure separating MS1 and the existing heritage building (Hollydene House).
