The building is a laboratory for studying genomics in Irapuato, Mexico. The Mexican studio TEN Arquitectos has designed this building which is part of an extension to the Institute of Agricultural Studies.
The building’s location is an empty field with a fault line deep below. A paved courtyard separated the building into two parts where administration and an auditorium on one side and the laboratories on the other. Earth has been banked up against the stacked rectangular volumes to give the impression that the building is emerging from the surrounding landscape.
A series of terraces modulate transitions between interior and exterior, lab and field. The secluded patios are created by cutting void that allow light to penetrate into the building. The embedded laboratories provide private and isolated spaces for research and also insulated and easily controlled environments for testing. In contrast, the administrative and auditorium spaces assert the presence of the technical and the social. The façades are in transparency and precision that bring the landscape into the building.
